1.通读全文，了解文章大意
这是做完型填空的第一步，即以快速阅读的方式浏览全文，了解文章大意，抓住主题和关键词，为解题做好准备。通读全文并了解文章大意是为了减少解题时的盲目性。但在迅速浏览全文的过程中，切勿望生词而却步，恰恰相反，碰到不明白的地方应该跳过去，等到填空需要细读时再去分析理解。
2.抓住首尾句
在阅读时要特别注意文章的首句和尾句，因为他们通常是文章的主题句，是全文的中心所在。从第一句中常可以窥见作者的写作目的，把握作者的写作思路以及文章将要叙述的内容，而最后一句则是作者对文章内容的归纳总结，表明作者的观点和态度，有利于考生对文章的理解。
3.联系上下文，进行逻辑推理
完形填空中针对有些空格而给出的四个选项从词汇搭配,语法和单句的角度考虑有时均行得通,但由于文章是一个完整的统一体,词,句,段三者之间存在着内在逻辑关系,此时,需要在上下文中寻找有关提示或暗示,对文章的情节发展做出合乎逻辑的推理判断,抓住提供语言信息的词语,理顺句与句之间的关系,以确定合理的答案。
4.根据语言知识和语法知识解题
完型填空中有相当一部分题涉及各种句子结构，基本语法要点，固定搭配以及习惯用法等。因此在解题是需要运用已掌握的语言知识和语法知识解题。
a当遇到需要填词的题时，首先要考虑这个词在句中是什么成分，词性是什么。
b如果需要填的是名词，就要考虑其单复数和所有格形式。
c如果需要填的是形容词，副词，就要考虑是用原级，比较级还是最高级形式。
d如果填的是动词，则要考虑其时态语态，人称变化，语气以及非谓语动词的一般式，完成式，被动式等。
e如果需要填的是介词，则要注意其固定搭配的用法。
f如果需要填的是冠词，则要注意应用定冠词还是不定冠词。
5.运用背景知识解题
背景知识在解答完型填空题时往往具有重要的辅助作用。有些空不需要花费太多的时间去研究上下文，有些空无论从上下文还是词汇，语法着眼都无法找到解题信息，而运用背景知识也许很快能找到答案，因此，注意背景知识的运用很重要。
下面我们具体看几个实例:
利用首句来解题，结合上下文来选择
首句一般不设空。因此我们应重视首句，并利用首句预测短文的问题和全文内容。
