(1) ago 与before
ago 表示以现在为起点的“以前”,before指以过去或将来的某时刻为起点的“以前”。泛指“以前”时,用before而不用ago.
I started woring in the school three years ago.
我在三年前就开始在学校工作。
Last year he left the army that he had joined eighteen years before.
去年他离开了他十八年前参军的军队。
We never met them before.
我们以前从未见过他们。
(2) very与much
A. very 修饰形容词或副词的原级,much修饰形容词或副词的比较级,修饰动词要用much,或very much.
very good, very well, much better
I like this film very much.
我非常喜欢这部电影。
B. very修饰用作形容词的现在分词
very interesting, very exciting
C. very修饰某些习惯上被用作形容词的过去分词
a very pleased look
He is very tired.teacheray.com
他非常疲倦。
My English is very limited.
我的英语很有限。
D. much可以修饰动词,very则不能。修饰动词时应注意much或very much的位置。
I enjoyed the concert (very) much.
I (very) much enjoyed the concert.
我非常喜欢这场音乐会。
(3) already, yet与still
A. already表示某事已经发生;yet表示期待某事发生;still表示某事还在进行
He’s already finished his work.
他已经完成了他的工作。
He hasn’t finished his work yet.
他还没有完成他的工作。
Are you still learning French?
你还在学法语吗?
B. already和yet可用于疑问句,但含义不同
Have you met Mr. wang yet?
你(到目前为止)见过王先生没有?(一般性问句)
Have you already met Mr. wang?
你(竟然)已经见到王先生了吗?(表示出乎意料)
(4) ever与once
A. ever用于疑问句,条件句,否定句时做“曾经,一旦”讲
Have you ever been to America?
你曾经去过美国吗?
B. ever用于比较级或最高级的句子中
This is the best film that I have ever seen.
这是我看过的最好的电影。
C. ever可用来加强语气
I am happier now than ever before.
我现在比以前更幸福了。
D. ever用于疑问词后,意为“到底,究竟”
What ever do you mean?
你到底是什么意思?
E. once 用于肯定句中,应译为“曾经,一度,从前”
This novel was once very popular but nobody reads it today.
这部小说曾经很受欢迎,但今天没人读。
F. once用于句末意为“一次”
You should take this medicine once a week.
你应该每周吃一次这种药。
G. once 用于条件句,做“一旦”讲
If you once understand this rule, you will have no further difficulty.
如果你一旦理解了这条规则,你就不会再有困难了。
